July 16, 2025
Attendance:Alex Kinsella, Liz Maloney, Sebastien Bigorre, Bryan Urquhart, Ciara Pimm, Kim Hoyt
#1 Beach cleanups (first Thursday of the month at noon)
• July 17th - Fadime
• August 7th - Liz
• September 4th - Alex
#2 Lunch and Learn updates
• July 23rd — A Taste of Health.
• Dr. Kumara has lots of knowledge and local connections. He will give a
presentation and sampling of three recipes from his book.
• 16 people signed up so far, open to WHOI and non-WHOI guests. Need to
know RSVP number to figure how much food to prepare. We’ll be able to put up
signs directing for parking, etc.
• Advertisement? Seb will print flyers to put up around WHOI. Bryan will check in
about advertising at the hospital.
• Fall: Megan Amsler talking about changing federal landscape, renewable opportunities?
Or similar from one of our CES energy consultants? Liz will check in with them.
#3 Event planning
• KidWind 2025: Alex will give a presentation about offshore wind projects to the students
at Mass Maritime on 7/17
• Mass energy interns: unclear if the energy utilities are going to auto-populate the data for
the larger buildings.
• Alternate commuting day? I.e. bus or bike or carpool, etc. A day in the fall would be nice
because it’s not too hot or cold and there’s late daylight.
• Ciara will update the postdoc bus primer.
• Alex will lead bird walk at 8 am on August 26th
• Repair cafe — can we do it in the fall?
#4 Garden/landscape updates
• Garden is doing well!
• Invasive pulling last week was a success. But Japanese knotweed is almost impossible to
eradicate. How often would we need to pull it to keep an area clear? We can prioritize
areas that we want to keep clean, like the rose garden.
• Should we team up with other ERGs again for invasive pulling? That seemed to work
well. We could also partner with them for the beach cleanups.
• Seb will contact WHOI communications to gauge interest for removing knotweed
behind Bell House.
#5 STF Communications
• Fadime has been revitalizing the Instagram page.
• Do we want a Slack channel? Some use Slack, others don’t. It might help us engage a
different group of participants. It would be opt-in, and there’s no real downside to
having it.
• Fadime suggested she could give a Jelly Talk (casual talk to other JP students) about
Sustainability efforts. Seb will talk with her about it at the beach cleanup.
Our next meeting is Wednesday, August 20th at 1 pm
