#1 Power Down Poster – With 2 weeks left in August, it’s so important to encourage co-workers to power down during the hottest summer days!
- Large posters on easels have been place in our largest buildings,
- Smaller signs posted on bulletin boards (were sent to all Admin-Pros)
- in Headlines
Action:
- Be ready to notify all WHOI employees if a Demand Event occurs (our performance during that afternoon becomes our ‘Tag,’ and we are charged for that peak kw Tag for the rest of the year (DD + SM).
- If a Tag Event occurs, please ask people in your building to Power Down the rest of the afternoon! (All)
#2 Solar Update-
- We discussed the success of the Solar Fair event, and hope to offer this annually.
- Our Whoi solar contract (142 kw) is with our legal team for review.
#3 Alternative Vehicles – Our objective is tofind electric or hybrid alternative vans + trucks for Whoi’s fleet within the $50k or less category
- Pam provided us with a Sierra Club EV resource.https://content.sierraclub.org/evguide/
- It was suggested that WHOI’s Procurement team research EV Consortium opportunities – NJPA, National Joint Purchasing Alliance. http://www.njpacoop.org/cooperative-purchasing/join-njpa/
Action:
- Contact Whoi’s Procurment team to research consortium purchasing of EVs for our fleet (SM)
- Develop team to pursue rebates (Seb, Pam + Steph)
#4 WSS – WHOI Social Sustainability: Lots of exciting social events taking place!
- Outdoor Movie Night – Colin + team of people planning it-Date Thursday in August 24 + 31st(need helpers)
- Screen on the Green movie events! They are FREE, family-friendly, and we will have fresh popcorn! The only thing you need to bring is your own beach chair or blanket, snacks (or a full picnic), and something to drink (and maybe some insect repellent)!

#5 Bike Storage Update – Big successes for WHOI’s Bike Program!
- Awarded Bike Friendly Business Silver Status by League of American Bicyclers
- Officially launched covered bike storage units in 3 locations- Swift Barn, Carriage House Basement, + Green Container!
- Ken updated our Bike Website: http://www.whoi.edu/website/sustainability/biking
- Bike racks installed next to Redfield for town + Whoi use
- Contact smadsen@whoi.edu if you plan to use it – I’ll give you the combo
- STF Members suggested the need for Bike Storage Guidelines, which resulted in the following:

Bike Storage Information and Guidelines
- This unit is intended for daily use, not long-term storage.
- Space will be available on a first-come-first-served basis each day, with priority given to commuters.
- WHOI is not responsible for lost or stolen items, please lock your bike to the rack and secure or remove all valuables.
- Please label your bike with your name/email so we can find you if necessary.
- Please help keep the unit tidy and safe—contact sustainability@whoi.edu if you notice any problems.
- There are three storage units at WHOI: the Green Bike Van behind Clark South, Carriage House Basement and Swift Barn.
- Post Guidelines in each of the 3 Storage Units (SM)
