Wandering the halls of WHOI, you may have noticed small rainbow stickers sprinkled throughout the buildings. The stickers depict a ship’s silhouette, set against the colors of the new pride flag, designed by Daniel Quasar. These small stickers help Queer folks identify spaces where they can expect to feel comfortable and in the company of allies. Although this may seem like a small gesture, for many, the impact is quite significant. In 2014, Biological Oceanographer Kyle Frischkorn wrote an article in Scientific American about how seeing these stickers at WHOI encouraged him to continue pursuing a career in science. The campaign was originally started at MIT, but soon spread to neighboring institutions.

If you would like to play a small role in making your office space more inclusive, consider getting a sticker from GLOW’s website. GLOW is a group of folks that aspire to make the Woods Hole community a more welcoming place for members of the LGBTQIA+ community as well as their partners, allies and people that are questioning. If you would like to get in touch, you can reach out to us at glow-owner@whoi.edu.
