Alternate Paths to Graduate School
There's more than one way to catch a fish, and more than one path that arrives at a graduate degree! Here, we interview a slew of current JP students and WHOI postdoctoral researchers, and ask them the one big question, "So, how the heck did you end up studying [insert highly-specific scientific subfield here]?" We dive in kelp forests with Jeanne Bloomberg, visit the Staten Island Zoo as an aquarist with James Brice, fly to Hawaii with Ian Robertson, consider a law degree with Alice Ren, and dance in the Louisville Ballet with Roger Creel.
Winding Road to WHOI
Erica Herrera, recent JP graduate, walks us through the winding path that brought her to MIT-WHOI Joint Program. From a ski shop in Colorado, Erica embarks on an epic journey across America working various jobs in the outdoors industry, and finally returns to college to pursue a newfound dream of becoming a scientist.
Stories at Sea: Chloe gets her Sea Legs
In late May 2024, the R/V Kilo Moana departed on a 1 month journey to investigate the transport of organic carbon from the surface to the deep ocean. Aboard were two oceanographers with very different backgrounds - experienced seagoing oceanographer Zephyr Girard, and Chloe Dean, a relative newbie to research at sea. Here, Chloe Dean tells us what it's really like to work as a scientist at sea, and provides a thrilling update to her previous accounts of extreme seasickness.
