There are two significant days celebrated in August, and both can encourage us to learn more about people in our communities and consider a viewpoint that is different from our own.

August 9 is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. To celebrate, you can educate yourself by listening to podcasts or radio programs that highlight indigenous voices, you can support indigenous artists, or you could learn about indigenous language poetry. The 2022 theme is the Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge.

August 26 is Women’s Equality Day. This date was first proclaimed by Congress in 1973 to commemorate women gaining the vote in 1920. Today, Women’s Equality Day not only remembers the passage of the 19th Amendment, but is also a chance to seek and encourage full equality for women.
