Heidemarie M. Stefanyshyn-Piper (CAPTAIN, USN) is a former NASA Astronaut who flew aboard two Space Shuttle flights. Her first mission, STS-115 in 2006, was billed by NASA as one of the most complicated space construction efforts ever conducted, and the STS-115 astronauts had trained longer than any other NASA crew. On this mission, Stefanyshyn-Piper performed two space-walks (EVA's), each over 6 hours in duration. On her second mission, STS-126 in 2008, she was the lead space walker and performed 3 of the 4 spacewalks.
Stefanyshyn-Piper graduated from MIT in 1984 with a BSME, and obtained a MSME from MIT in 1985. She received her commission from the Navy ROTC Program at MIT in June 1985, and went on to become an Engineering Duty Officer and Deep Sea Diver in the U.S. Navy. She was assigned to numerous repair activities and is a qualified and experienced salvage officer. Major salvage projects include a Peruvian submarine and the tanker EXXON HOUSTON. Selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in April 1996, Stefanyshyn-Piper served as the lead Astronaut Office Representative for Payloads and in the Astronaut Office EVA branch. A veteran of two space flights, Stefanyshyn-Piper has logged over 27 days in space, and 33 hours - 42 minutes of EVA in 5 space walks. She also commanded a 12 day undersea habitat training mission. Captain Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper retired from NASA in July 2009 to return to the U.S. Navy at the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C.
Please join us to hear about Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper's remarkable career.
