The Deepest Fish

The snailfish is the deepest known fish in the ocean, capable of withstanding crushing pressure, near-freezing temperatures, and a variable and indeterminate food supply. Alan Jamieson from the University of Aberdeen and Mackenzie Gerringer from the University of Hawaii are studying images and physical specimens of snailfish on the HADES 2014 cruise to understand the hadal ecosystem and the adaptations life has made to conditions in the deep ocean.
