Instrumentation
WHOI's OBS Lab has a long history spanning four decades that includes development and steady improvement of instruments to measure underwater sound and movement in the Earth's crust from the seafloor, where high pressure, low temperature, and a corrosive environment make fine measurements difficult. WHOI currently maintains a fleet of more than 90 instruments and provides instrumentation and expertise in collecting marine seismic data. Our OBSIP history also includes more than 330 years of on-bottom instrument time and over 900 deployments and recoveries at sea.
