OCB2021 had a variety of early career-focused activities and interaction options leading up to and throughout the workshop. To guide self-selection, we loosely defining "early career" as student through assistant-level (pre-tenure) faculty or equivalent non-permanent or nonacademic positions. We strove to create conversation spaces for participants around a shared set of challenges and opportunities.
We kicked off OCB2021 with an afternoon Early Career mixer on June 4, 2021.
Throughout the event there were Networking Sessions specific to early career challenges and opportunities such as job searches, teaching and mentoring, JEDI, COVID challenges and setbacks, balancing work with young families, etc.
We set up an early career Jamboard for brainstorming and an early career Slack workspace with multiple channels for getting to know one another and sharing thoughts on different topics. These resources will remain active beyond OCB2021.
On June 18, 2021, we convened an Ocean Careers and Funding reception for students and postdocs - an opportunity to mingle with agency managers, SSC (OCB's Scientific Steering Committee) members, program directors, academic administrators, private industry, etc. and to learn more about ocean science funding and career paths.
