GLOBAL TRENCHES

The hadal zone, composed primarily of deep ocean trenches and troughs, represents the deepest marine habitat on Earth (6000 to 11,000 meters or 3.7 to 6.8 miles), an area about the size of Australia. Far from being devoid of life as originally perceived in the 1800s, more than 400 species are known to live in the 21 trenches around the world.

nsf1The Hadal Ecosystem Studies (HADES) project is a collaborative effort funded by the National Science Foundation.
