This document summarises discussion of the 2013 workshop and outlines major themes proposed for the collaborative projects/papers
1. AO productivity in observations and models
A data set for a number of locations with simultaneous measurements of upper mixed layer depth, surface Chl-a, T and primary productivity was put together by the group of P. Matrai as part of a NASA funded project PARR5 (Primary Production Algorithm Round Robin focused on the Arctic Ocean). Where possible, the measurements are complimented by vertical profiles of T, S, DIN, Chl-a and primary production, but the subset of points where all of these measurements are available will be very limited. All group working with productivity algorithms/models are invited by P.Matrai to estimate water column productivity on the basis of the given surface Chl-a, upper mixed layer and T for intercomparison purposes. It appears that 3D AO (or global) models can benefit from the extended (with the profiles) data set to perform an intercomparison/validation experiment.
3D modellers: please notify Katya Popova and Nadja Steiner if you are interested to participate in the3D model intercomparison experiment. The results from the models will be discussed at FAMOS meeting in October 2014.

2. Role of the subsurface Chl-a maximum:
a coordinated observational and modelling study to estimate contribution of the subsurface Chl-a maximum into depth-integrated Chl-a, biomass and primary production. Study of potential decoupling of Chl-a, PP and Carbon maxima.

3D modellers: please notify Katya Popova if you are interested in participating in the3D model intercomparison experiment. 3d fields of primary production, Chl-a, DIN, and 2D fields of UML depth will be required from your model. Minimum frequency is monthly. Higher frequency output will be required from the participants who are able to provide it, but we may restrict it to a selected number of points.
1D modellers: Contact Nadja Steiner and Molly Palmer if you would like to participate and be prepared to run your model for selected locations of the AO. Please specify if you need external forcing and what fields your model requires (these fields can be extracted from 3D models).
3. Under -ice production
A coordinated observational and modelling study on under ice primary production: mechanics, seasonal cycle and contribution to annual PP in the Arctic. This study will be combined with the testing/discussion of parametrisations of light transfer through sea-ice and closely linked to the SCOR-WG BEPSII.
Model experiments will be compared with observations from ITPs (Ice tethered profilers)
