{"id":382,"date":"2018-10-11T16:27:59","date_gmt":"2018-10-11T20:27:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.whoi.edu\/sustainability\/?page_id=382"},"modified":"2018-11-13T16:57:09","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T20:57:09","slug":"august-15-2018","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.whoi.edu\/sustainability\/meetings-activities\/meeting-minutes\/august-15-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"August 15, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>August 15, 2018<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Attendance:<\/strong> Pam Polloni, Stephanie Madsen, Holly Wilson, Ron Reif, Sebastien Bigorre, Kayleah Griffen, Alex Bocconcelli<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>#1\u00a0 Plastic Alternatives Ships + On Shore<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sarah Fuller, PJ (the Chief mate) and Stephanie met to address sustainability on our ships on August 7<sup>th<\/sup>(we left Sustainable Event Catering binder with Steward on the Atlantis)\n<ul>\n<li>At the STF Meeting- Aug. 15<sup>th<\/sup> Sarah, who is WHOI\u2019s R\/V Science COO, gave a comprehensive update regarding sustainability efforts underway on the Ships including: plastic alternatives, sustainable food purchases by Stewards, sorting of trash-recyclables-compostables, Atlantis upgrades in dry dock 2019, Unols sustainable efforts, and bird and mammal observers on ships)<\/li>\n<li>Sarah, Pam + Stephanie are creating a Sustainable Ship flyer to post on Ships (work in progress)<\/li>\n<li>Green Marine Program update \u2013 after discussion, we focused our goal on understanding the UNOLS sustainability initiatives before considering being a \u201cSupporter\u201d of the Green Marine Program. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.green-marine.org\/\">https:\/\/www.green-marine.org\/<\/a>\u00a0 We would most likely fit in the Supporter category (Research\/Education\/Conservation: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.green-marine.org\/supporters\/\">https:\/\/www.green-marine.org\/supporters\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Demand Response events in August (Monday Aug. 6 was peak event 5-6pm) \u2013 ship participated by closing doors and shutting off lights<\/li>\n<li>Green To Go options for the Buttery and the Community at large. Kayleah described the Green To Go program at WPI and listed the pros and cons (lots of Pros!)\u00a0 Kayleah will meet with personnel at the Buttery to see if this program might work.\u00a0 Example: <a href=\"https:\/\/farmsandfields.wordpress.com\/2013\/08\/02\/announcing-vt-dinings-reusable-to-go-container-program\/\">https:\/\/farmsandfields.wordpress.com\/2013\/08\/02\/announcing-vt-dinings-reusable-to-go-container-program\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Action: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Generate the Sustainable Ships flyer (Sarah, Pam + SM)<\/li>\n<li>Consult with Annette at UNOLs about Green Marine Supporter recommendations (SF)<\/li>\n<li>Create Green-To-Go power point and pitch idea to Steve Senior and Buttery Staff (KG)<\/li>\n<li>Share utility slides with ship focus with Marine Ops team on Sept. 13<sup>th<\/sup> at 9:30am (SM)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong># 2\u00a0 WSS Events \u00a0&#8211; looking for volunteers to sponsor new social events; lawns games, hikes, bike rides etc<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Science Stroll \u2013 Saturday, August 11 \u2013 Event planners are making it as sustainable as possible<\/li>\n<li>Sheep at Peterson Farm Lunch n Learn- Oct 12<sup>th<\/sup> at 12:15 Carriage House (new date!)<\/li>\n<li>The Sea Around Us Celebration- Sat + Sunday, Sept 15 +16 (need volunteers for Anything But a Boat Race \u2013 Sunday 11:00-1:00pm)<\/li>\n<li>Clean Commute Challenge (Seb + Cassia are planning event with Kyle Bonus on Friday, Sept. 21)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Action: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recruit volunteers for Anything But a Boat Race (SM)<\/li>\n<li>Plan Clean Commute Challenge \u2013 flyer and set up breakfast table (SB + CA)<\/li>\n<li>Orchestrate field trip to Compost With Me -Ryther Farm (SM)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>#3\u00a0 STF Website<\/strong> \u2013 we plan to transfer STF Website content to a WordPress page<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mai, Dina + Steph plan to meet on August 14<sup>th<\/sup> at 2:30 (rescheduled)- turns out the Communications Intern moved a lot of the items over during the summer (thanks intern!!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add Green It Forward Program page to website (need to formulate this program) + add new resources (recycling interns)<\/li>\n<li>Send pictures to Dina to add (SM-done)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>#4\u00a0 Electric Vehicles + Charging Stations \u2013 \u2013 WHOI + Personal<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EV Fair for Employees! Date is Thursday Sept 20 from 10:00-1:00 in Clark Lobby. Sponsored by STF + Green Driving with Mass Energy. Great deals on personal Electric Vehicle purchases. Link to see chart of cost breakdown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/massenergywebservices.com\/drivegreen\/table-all.php#bolt\"><strong>http:\/\/massenergywebservices.com\/drivegreen\/table-all.php#bolt<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sebastien reached out to EV drivers at WHOI and USGS \u2013 several are willing to share their EV stories and advice during the fair.<\/li>\n<li>EV Make Ready Program sponsored by Eversource (application was submitted by SM) \u2013 we qualified and plan to install 2 new charging ports at School St. Lot and 2 at Clark Lot (front of building)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Order 2 dual charging ports with SemaConnect (SM)<\/li>\n<li>Orchestrate + sign documents with Eversource (SM)<\/li>\n<li>Cone off front parking spots at Clark on Sept 20<sup>th<\/sup> during the EV Fair \u2013 communicate with security guards (SM)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>#5 Recycling \u2013 National Sword changes and cost implications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recycling pipet box program at WHOI \u2013 should we offer this? VWR sponsors it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/us.vwr.com\/store\/product\/9227627\/pipet-tip-box-recycling-program-terracycle\">https:\/\/us.vwr.com\/store\/product\/9227627\/pipet-tip-box-recycling-program-terracycle<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Solicit interest from WHOI staff in the pipet box recycling program (SM) \u2013 Several people in Redfield already expressed interest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Turns out that pipet boxes are #5 and can be recycled in our single-stream recycle bins\u2026no need to pay for the program.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>#6\u00a0 New Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chairs and tables outside on Redfield patio are a huge success!
