


{"id":35,"date":"2018-08-20T13:13:36","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T17:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.whoi.edu\/sustainability\/?page_id=35"},"modified":"2018-08-20T13:14:47","modified_gmt":"2018-08-20T17:14:47","slug":"november-15-2017","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.whoi.edu\/sustainability\/meetings-activities\/meeting-minutes\/november-15-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"November 15, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>\n\t\tNovember 15, 2017<br \/>\n\t<\/h1>\n<p><strong>#1 MassRides \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Two Events sponsored by MassRides and hosted at Whoi or MBL are in the works for Winter-Spring!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Meet Your Match Event &#8211; Feb 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0at Noon \u2013 Swope \u2013 Meigs Room.\u00a0<\/strong>MassRides will provide light refreshments (but not lunch) and encourage employees from all surrounding institutions to meet others by zipcode and perhaps set up carpooling\u2026even if you carpool once a week you are having an impact!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Try It Day \u2013 sometime in May.\u00a0<\/strong>MassRides will provide free breakfast for employees who TRY an alternative commute to work that day\u2026could be bike, carpool, walk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Headlines Entry this week:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Green Commuting\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>WHOI is partnered with MassRIDES, a free program of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) designed to help reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality and mobility. Through MassRIDES, WHOI can now offer employees rewards for their green trips and eligibility for the Emergency Ride Home program!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuride.com\/\">NuRIDE<\/a>\u2014This free tool helps residents of Massachusetts find carpool or vanpool matches and provides rewards for green commutes. Create an account on the website to find someone to carpool or vanpool with, if you don\u2019t already have someone in mind to ask. For every green trip you log into the dashboard, you will receive points that you can apply to redeem discounts to local and national retailers. Schedule for January (SM)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>#3<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Recycling<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 We discussed what we learned at the Recycling Lunch and Learn. Three main takeaways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>75% of our recycling gets sold off to China<\/li>\n<li>Wet paper is not recyclable \u2013 purchase a recycle bin with lid<\/li>\n<li>Acceptable limits of contaminants (non-recycling items) is decreasing from 10% to 3%&#8230;so continue to do your best by rinsing out containers and jars before recycling and rip off top of pizza box (recycle) and compost or trash the bottom (with food contaminant).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We may start a separate #5 plastics collection bin (tbd)\u2026need volunteers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set up display in Clark Lobby of what CAN\u2019T be recycled (SM+PP)<\/li>\n<li>Send picture from town hall depicting what can\u2019t be recycled to Dina and she\u2019ll post on our website (SM +DP)<\/li>\n<li>Find others to help Pam Polloni with #5 Plastic recycling program<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>#4\u00a0 LED Fixtures and bulb installation Update\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Improving energy efficiency at WHOI by installing LEDs in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Geosecs \u2013 completed Oct. 6, 2017- estimated 5 KW energy, 35,098 KWHours,and $6,000 annual savings!<\/li>\n<li>Fye Lab \u2013 Completed Nov. 9, 2017- estimated 17 KW, 77,000 KWHours and $11,000 annual savings<\/li>\n<li>Marine Ops \u2013 Completed Nov 10, 2017- estimated 1.4 KW, 4,700 KWHours and $1000 annual savings<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>#5\u00a0 Vbikes \u2013\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbikes.com\/\"><strong>http:\/\/www.vbikes.com\/<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hubless Bike Share program. We\u2019ve been communicating with Chamber of Commerce and Bikeways Committee to determine feasibility of the program in Falmouth + Woods Hole (which would include bikes at Whoi) TBD<\/p>\n<p><strong>Updates<\/strong>: Falmouth Bikeways Committee may pilot the program (TBD) for 6-8 weeks in the spring. Guidelines are needed however, and details worked out such as where to park bikes, who will be the \u2018manager\u2019 and tech, should they bid out the program etc.\u00a0<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>#6\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 New Business \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grafton Briggs left us the new battery powered leaf blowers to try out. They have been using these to clear leaves and paths around buildings as an alternative to gas powered units.<\/li>\n<li>Ice Thermal Storage \u2013 we are candidates for an Eversource pilot program which involves installing Ice Bear Thermal Storage somewhere on our campus (looking at building candidates).\u00a0 Cape Light Compact would provide the unit for free as part of the pilot program.
