


{"id":1080,"date":"2019-12-13T11:41:34","date_gmt":"2019-12-13T15:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.whoi.edu\/sustainability\/?page_id=1080"},"modified":"2020-01-07T12:20:55","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T16:20:55","slug":"november-20-2019","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.whoi.edu\/sustainability\/meetings-activities\/meeting-minutes\/november-20-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"November 20, 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\t<h1>November 20, 2019<\/h1>\r\n<p>Attendance: Lauren Dykman, Stephanie Madsen, Scott Lindell, Seb Bigorre, Mindy Richlen, Dina Pandya<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>#1 Recycling- Behind the Scenes \u2013 Lunch n Learn with Kari Parcell \u2013 Friday, Nov. 15<sup>th<\/sup> 12:15 Carriage House. <\/strong>Kari\u2019s presentation was well attended 24+ people and we learned a few things:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>clean recycled materials well (one contaminated bin can ruin it for a whole truck load!)<\/li>\r\n<li>do not put shredded paper in the recycle bins \u2013 contact <a href=\"mailto:smadsen@whoi.edu\">smadsen@whoi.edu<\/a> if you need information<\/li>\r\n<li>cost will increase. Right now we recycle for free, expect to be charged in the future<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Generate Headlines submissions for new recycling information (i.e. shredded paper) (volunteer?)<\/li>\r\n<li>Electronics upcycling flyer \u2013 being created by Seb + Helen<\/li>\r\n<li>Recycling Pipette tips + boxes with USA Scientific \u2013 pdf has been loaded to our STF page <a href=\"https:\/\/web.whoi.edu\/sustainability\/initiatives\/waste-recycling\/recycling\/\">https:\/\/web.whoi.edu\/sustainability\/initiatives\/waste-recycling\/recycling\/<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Contact (Nick Putnam, <a href=\"mailto:nputnam@usascientific.com\">nputnam@usascientific.com<\/a>) if you are interested in participating.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>#2\u00a0 Farmers Market \u2013 set up Market Box at WHOI next fall?\u00a0 Jennie Rheuban leading the charge.\u00a0 <\/strong>Jennie was not able to attend so we didn\u2019t spend much time discussing.<\/p>\r\n<p>Members mentioned a shuttle each Thursday to the Farmers Market during work would be great!<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Shuttle might not be possible but perhaps we could carpool?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Identify leadership if this is to move forward. Someone will have to set up carpooling (JR)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>#3\u00a0 Sustainable Efforts WHOI wide<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Update from Seb Bigorre- Nov 22 at 12:00pm Smith Conf Room- BOSS Event was super successful!<\/li>\r\n<li>Working together to create a WHOI Sustainability Plan- created a working group for writing the Plan<\/li>\r\n<li>Laura Dykman\u2013 Divesting from Carbon funds \u2013 is it possible?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Lauren read Mark Abbott\u2019s response to a letter she drafted in October, which included sentiment such as, \u201cvalue it, will look into it, but can\u2019t promise anything.\u2019<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Find examples of other research institutions who have successfully divested (we need exemplars \u2013 LD)<\/li>\r\n<li>Follow up with working groups (those created from BOSS meeting) (SM)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>#4 Solar Update \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Off-site solar arrays totaling 6 MW and over $320,000 in savings since Fall 2017\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>New offsite solar added 1 MW in Canton, Ma \u2013 carport at North End Motors<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>Rooftop solar \u2013 Clark and Clark So. rooftop in January 2020 (thanks to Donor and Facilities)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>sign contract and move forward with roof engineering assessment (SM)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>#5 WSS Events <\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>Green Driving Lunch n Learn \u2013 <\/strong>Anna Vanderspek from Green Energy Consumers Org (Feb most likely)<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Beekeeping Meetings \u2013 setting up for summer installation (Nov 5 10-11 Bigelow 217) <\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Water kiosk<\/strong> ribbon cutting \u2013 Waterfront Park (date TBD spring time)<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Repair Caf\u00e9 debrief \u2013 <\/strong>held in Oct and was awesome<strong>!!!<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>schedule Drive Green Lunch n Learn (for Feb)- SM<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Schedule next Repair Caf\u00e9 (SM)<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Create Beekeeping action items (DK)<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>#6\u00a0 Update on Single-use Plastics at WHOI 2020. <\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>Letter went out to All WHOI employees on Dec 10, 2019. Such great support from Leadership at WHOI!<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>add letter link to STF website (DP)<\/li>\r\n<li>schedule alternatives to plastic pop-ups (SM + team)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>#7\u00a0 New Business<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Regional Transportation discussion <\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Can we offer free bus seats on MIT bus?
