\/>\n<\/em><\/h2>\n\n<p>Since December 2001, the WHOI OBS Lab has supported 32 different experiments on 67 cruises conducted by 92 unique principal investigators amounting to 919 deployments and (click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since the formation of OBSIP in 1999, the WHOI OBS group has carried out 919 OBS deployments and recoveries for a total on-bottom time of\u00a0 more than 330 years. Every byte of data, whether from an active-source or broadband experiment, has been archived at the <a href=\"http:\/\/ds.iris.edu\/ds\/nodes\/dmc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IRIS Data Management Center<\/a> in SEED format.\u00a0 Active-source data have been archived at the IRIS Data Management Center in SEGY format. Loss rates for WHOI OBS, since OBSIP started in 1999 are 2% for both short-period and broad-band OBS.<\/p>\n\t<h2>Data Flow<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_793\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2017\/07\/DataFlowDiagPortrait-cropped.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-793\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2017\/07\/DataFlowDiagPortrait-cropped-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Data processing workflow for WHOI OBS data. (click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We use the Antelope software package from BRTT to make a fully valid database prior to shipping miniseed files and a &#8220;dataless&#8221; file to the IRIS Data Management Center. We also store Antelope databases for all our experiments on a multi-terabyte mass storage system for QA\/QC.<\/p>\n\t<h2>Computers and Networking<\/h2>\n\n<p>The WHOI OBS Lab includes an extensive network and IT infrastructure. A private Local Area Network (blue) with over one hundred connections enables continuous monitoring, testing, and troubleshooting of all instruments. Interconnections to WHOI&#8217;s Wide Area Network (green) and the internet provide secure access and remote, off-site backup of all systems. A lab file server contains all engineering documents and records, instrument and major component histories, and field records, logs, and notes from every experiment and is mirrored inside sea-going lab vans for complete and immediate availability in the field.
