Each week, one of us will be around to chat, hang out, and do work with. It’s meant to be a relaxed and informal setting, and we will post where they will be, and with whom, on our calendar on the website each week. Note that MIT EAPS Refs are also starting an office hours program, so if you’d like someone to talk with at MIT, their office hours will be Wednesday from 10-11 in 54-611. I’m a Bio Oce student from Seattle. At WHOI, I study microbial communities at deep-sea hydrothermal vents to inform the search for life in similar conditions on other worlds, particularly moons of Saturn and Jupiter. I’m into crafting, kickboxing, and cooking for friends. I began volunteering at a crisis hotline when I was in high school and quickly realized how impactful a listening ear can be. Please reach out to me if I can support you in any way-whether it’s finding the right resource for you or just being there to listen, I’d love to be there for you.

Jonas Kaare-Rasmussen

jkaaras@mit.edu

I grew up exploring the mountainous Southwest. As a student, I use isotopes to understand how the Earth works. I work on a range of problems, from how chemical exchange occurs across the core-mantle boundary, to why rocks melt during Himalayan-scale mountain-building events, to tracking sponges through the subduction cycle. If I am not in my office, I am probably in the mountains, hiking, climbing, skiing, or running. Although I think grad school is difficult everywhere, the JP has a unique set of challenges that can feel isolating. I am always happy to chat and assist in making your time in this program enjoyable and uplifting!

Bailey Fluegel

bfluegel@mit.edu

Hi all! I’m Bailey and I am a geophysics student using electromagnetic techniques to learn more about fluids in the crust and their impact on earthquake cycles. I grew up in Minnesota and enjoy playing soccer, spending time by the water, and eating ice cream. I also serve as an RA for one of the undergraduate dorms at MIT, so I know all about the different resources available for students. I’m hoping what I’ve learned through my personal ups and downs in the Joint Program can help others through their own. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to chat about anything-I am here for you!

Mira Santos

miras@mit.edu

I’m from the Philippines, but I grew up in San Diego, CA. I enjoy being outside – hiking, camping, skiing, frisbeeing, climbing, slacklining – and cooking elaborate meals for my friends. I host occasional jam sessions and dinners at my co-op in Cambridgeport (ask me personally if you would like to join in).
