Francesco is a marine ecologist interested in the spatial and population ecology of marine megafauna. His current research focuses on the role of the environment in shaping population processes and the spatial distribution of seabirds.
Etienne Rouby
Postdoctoral Fellow and Investigator (2023- present)
Etienne is an animal ecologist interested in exploring how climate and human pressures impact marine megafauna demography. He estimates key vital parameters for several marine predator populations and forecasts their fate given natural and anthropogenic pressures. Finally, his ultimate goal is to provide the best available information to stakeholders to promote marine conservation.
Nicolas Joly
Postdoctoral Investigator (2024)
Nicolas, a marine ecologist, explores the connection between small-scale eco-evolutionary processes and population demography. His primary research revolves around characterizing and measuring the diversity of life histories among individuals within populations. His aim is to evaluate how inter-individual variability influences population dynamics, particularly in the context of climate change.
Jean-Pierre Elise

Jean-Pierre is a Master's student at the École Normale Supérieure in Lyon interested in demography, theoretical ecology and marine biology. At WHOI, he will explore the demographic consequences of individual heterogeneity along the slow-fast continuum.
Alice Eparvier

Alice is a Master's student at the École Normale Supérieure in Lyon, France, and is studying animal and population ecology. She is particularly interested in the impact of climate change on animal populations and in conservation biology. At WHOI, she will be working on the predictability of the response of emperor penguin populations to climate change.
Freddie Mckendrick

Freddie is a behavioural ecologist currently completing a PhD at the University of Liverpool. They are mainly interested in how individual variation in behaviour is maintained within populations with a particular focus on how different behavioural strategies may allow individuals to adapt to changing environments. Their PhD will focus on behavioural plasticity and its costs and benefits to Polar seabirds experiencing rapid environmental change, predominantly focusing on black-legged kittiwakes breeding in Svalbard.
Justine Wintz
Guest PhD student (2023-present)
Justine Wintz as a Ph.D. student at the Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (IPHC) with Dr. Claire Sarraux. She is studying the early development in the little penguin, focusing on the mechanisms and consequences at individual and population levels, considering factors such as climate, abiotic environment, parental investment, and competition within the brood. At WHOI, her research will extend to explore the demographic consequences of early development in the little penguin.
Sarah Becker
Guest PhD student (2023-present)
Sarah Becker is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado Boulder within the Department of Environmental Studies, under the guidance of Cassandra Brook. She is a key contributor to a joint ORCC project that bridges the efforts of WHOI and CU to understand and forecast the role of behavioral plasticity and evolutionary adaptation in anticipated population declines among species threatened by climate change. Specifically, Sarah's work focuses on elucidating the mechanistic connections between climatic shifts and the foraging behaviors of the black-browed albatross.
Ruijiao Sun

Ruijiao's research broadly centers on understanding how wildlife populations adapt to global change and designing effective conservation strategies. In her doctoral research at the FLEDGE Lab, she delved into the interplay between fishery activities and climate change, exploring their impacts on pair bond dynamics and demographic outcomes in monogamous seabird species. Currently, Ruijiao is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Marine Science Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara. Her ongoing project investigates the impacts of climate change on the dynamics of the endangered California amphibian community.
Joanie Van de Walle
Guest investigator
Joanie is a specialist in population dynamics of marine mammals at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. She is also an associated professor at Université de Sherbrooke. Her current work involves population monitoring and modelling of several cetaceans and pinniped species in Eastern Canada, but her research has led her to work on many species of birds and terrestrial mammals. Her main research interests revolve around understanding the impact of life-history strategies, human activities and environmental change on the demography of wild species.
