To harness growing interest among US scientists in Indian Ocean research, the US IIOE-2 Steering Committee held an Indian Ocean<\/strong> community workshop September 11-13, 2017 in La Jolla, CA<\/strong>. Through a combination of plenary sessions and smaller group discussions, participants in this workshop worked across disciplines of biological, chemical, physical, and geological oceanography, as well as climate dynamics and atmospheric science to generate integrated observing and process experiment strategies to\u00a0address some of the leading, multidisciplinary science questions in the Indian Ocean basin<\/a>. The workshop was sponsored by the US Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry (OCB) Program<\/a>, NASA Physical Oceanography, NOAA Ocean Observing and Monitoring Division, the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF), and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO).<\/p>\n Download Workshop Report <\/a>\n The primary outcome of this workshop will be a four-part workshop report that articulates U.S.-led contributions to the international IIOE-2 Science Plan, highlighting new research activities, as well as existing and new observing assets and modeling tools that could motivate U.S. research in the Indian Ocean, prioritizing links to Indian Ocean phenomena and improved process understanding. The report will be co-authored by the workshop steering committee and other workshop participants who contribute to the report. To ensure continuity in the discussions and ideas raised, attendees should remain in the same breakout group throughout the workshop<\/strong>. Each breakout session will have a different goal. After the breakout sessions, rapporteurs and discussion leaders will summarize their breakout discussions for all meeting attendees (in plenary). Each of these reports will be followed by open plenary discussion to engage broader input on activities proposed in each thematic breakout group.<\/p>\n\n Breakout Session 1 objective:<\/strong> Devise and prioritize potential U.S.-led projects\/regions\/topics related to the research theme<\/p>\n\n\n Breakout Session 2 objective:<\/strong> Discuss technical implementation of potential new projects and associated collaborations (both disciplinary and international)<\/p>\n\n Dinner on your own<\/p>\n\n Breakout Session 3 objective:<\/strong> Identify funding opportunities and existing observational infrastructure that could contribute to the implementation of new projects.<\/p>\n\n\n Workshop steering committee members and interested workshop participants will meet to summarize the results of the workshop and assign follow-up writing tasks.
