XRF X-Ray and Elemental Analysis

We have an X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Core Scanner that tells us how much of different elements are in a core. It also takes an x-ray of the core, which is very similar to the x-ray you might get at the doctor if you had a broken arm.

How does the XRF work?

The scanner radiates the elements in the surface sediments, which causes them to fluoresce. Each element has a characteristic fluorescence, so the XRF can identify which elements are in the sediments and how much of them there is.

This is an example of a radiograph scan of a core from Salt Pond, MA.
